성도라고 해서 항상 신앙에 따라 담대하게 행동할 수 있는 건 아니다. 안타깝지만, 때로는 현실의 거대한 파도 앞에서 시험에 들어 자기도 모르게 움츠러들고 주춤거리곤 한다. 그러다가 모든 게 끝났다는 깊은 낙심과 절망에 사로잡히기도 한다. 그때, 신자의 마음속은 모든 것을 접고 아무도 없는 곳으로 훌쩍 떠나버리고 싶은 생각으로 가득해진다. 지금껏 힘써온 일들이 모두 의미가 없으며 인생을 완전히 낭비했다는 자괴감에 시달리게 된다. 성경은 성도가 거센 시험 앞에서 한없이 작아지는 모습에 대해 이렇게 말한다.
